The state media in Iran and Syria claimed America was responsible for the attack on Monday.
“We did not carry out airstrikes in Syria last night,” Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated on Tuesday, issuing the Pentagon’s formal statement countering allegations from Syrian and Iranian state media. The two countries reported that a Monday night bombing in Eastern Syria killed at least nine people, eight soldiers, and one civilian, and claimed the attack came from nearby U.S. military operations.
The U.S. continues to contend with tensions in the Middle East, where U.S. military outposts have been attacked more than 100 times in the wake of Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli citizens in October. The Pentagon responded to those repeated attacks against the American military with an airstrike in February. While attacks against U.S. bases have decreased since then, the recent accusations indicate the ongoing hostility against U.S. military personnel in the region.
