410,060 acre lease proposed near Louisiana and Texas
The Department of the Interior (DOI) released its proposal last month to lease 410,060 acres in the Gulf of Mexico for offshore wind development. If approved, this would be the second lot established off the coast of Louisiana and Texas to be put up for auction for offshore wind companies. At full capacity, the area could contain enough wind turbines to power an estimated 1.2 million homes.
“Today’s announcement is another step forward in the Biden-Harris administration’s pursuit of building a clean energy future and permitting 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “We are taking action to jumpstart America’s offshore wind industry and using American innovation to deliver reliable, affordable power to homes and businesses, while also addressing the climate crisis.”
