The private sector has an increasing need for the 5G spectrum.
Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota introduced the “Spectrum Pipeline” bill this week that would require the Federal Communications Commission to auction off 1,250 megahertz of wireless communication spectrum within six years.
The federal government, particularly the Department of Defense, has claimed a large portion of America’s wireless spectrum for private use, operating military drones, collecting radar information, and sending various private communications. However, the government’s use of these wavelengths is decreasing as demand for wavelengths within the private sector is increasing. Companies are interested in purchasing wavelengths as personal and commercial use of the 5G spectrum expands. The senators say this presents a win-win scenario for a financially challenged government.
“To dominate in next-generation wireless technologies, stay ahead of our adversaries, and advance strong economic growth, the U.S. must create a pipeline to expand commercial access to mid-band spectrum,” stated Senator Cruz, ranking member of the Commerce Committee. “The Spectrum Pipeline Act of 2024 meets those goals while promoting both consumer and national security interests.“
