U.S. Labor Department Asks Mexico to Review Call Centers

Under the USMCA, Mexican company workers request assistance from U.S. regarding attempts to unionize.

The Department of Labor requested that the government of Mexico review a call center for Mexican company Atento located in Pachuca de Soto, Hidalgo. The workers at that location claim they are being illegally prevented from unionizing, with certain workers being terminated because of their attempts to unionize.

The Atento workers filed their complaints through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which has a joint labor committee to address such circumstances throughout North America. After conducting an investigation, the U.S. Department of Labor found evidence to corroborate the workers’ complaints.

“The U.S. government’s investigation revealed egregious employer conduct at the Hidalgo facility,” said Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee. “This conduct constituted retaliation against workers for their union activities and interference with union organizing. This is unacceptable. The Mexican labor law reform and the USMCA Rapid Response Mechanism were designed to address just this sort of violation. We look forward to working closely with the Government of Mexico to find solutions to these issues in this strategic sector.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Deputy Undersecretary Lee as she engages with Mexican labor authorities regarding the business preventing organized labor.
  • For wisdom for U.S. Labor Department officials as they support labor unions and workers.
