In God’s Keeping

The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.     Psalm 37:30

Psalm 37 is an encouragement, especially in these days when evil seems to have its way. The psalm can be summarized in this way: The wicked prosper, and the godly may struggle but do not fret. Trust in the Lord, do what is right, and wait patiently for Him to act. The righteous will never be abandoned.

As the end of January draws near, you may have experienced a setback or two… an unexpected issue that needed attention, sickness in the family, or simply a goal not met. An older King David had learned in his earliest years that “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might… and it will go well with you” (Deuteronomy 6:5, 18). When you delight in the Lord, committing your way to Him, “He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4), desires that align with His purpose for you.

Though David was pursued and his life threatened for decades, and though his sins were great, he always came back to the Lord in repentance, and the Lord blessed him. He was in God’s keeping and under His training. You are, as well. Invest your time in planting the law of God in your heart… study His Word so the words you speak will be peaceable and just, and He will provide for you.

Pray for the nation’s leaders to have their hearts drawn to the Savior. Let your words, as well as the meditation of your heart, be acceptable in God’s sight. He is your rock and your redeemer (Psalm 19:14). He desires the best for and from His children.

Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade like the grass
    and wither like the green herb.

3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.

7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!

23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
    when he delights in his way;
24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord upholds his hand.

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
    he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they take refuge in him.
