Discussions in Lebanon center on Hezbollah’s war against Israel.
Senior White House adviser to the president and former Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Amos Hochstein, is in Lebanon Thursday looking to calm tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Rocket launches continued to be fired by Hezbollah against Israeli military and civilian sites.
Advisor Hochstein was in Tel Aviv last week where he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister told the White House advisor that only a short window of time remains to find a diplomatic solution that will prevent an all-out war conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Advisor Hochstein told the prime minister he hopes to begin indirect negotiations on the border.
A National Security Council spokesperson said Advisor Hochstein was expected to meet with Lebanon’s acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati and other government and military officials in Beirut. Mikati has apparently been warned by Israel that what is happening in Gaza could happen in Lebanon if Hezbollah does not stand down.
The White House National Security Council spokesperson said, “The United States has made clear it does not support the ongoing conflict spreading into Lebanon and continues to exhaust all diplomatic options to see Israeli and Lebanese civilians return to their homes and live in security and stability.”
