The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has opened applications for a first-of-its-kind grant program, allocating $2 billion to address pollution in low-income communities.
It has been documented that low-income communities experience more pollution as cheaper areas are closer to emission-heavy factories or downstream from potent chemical runoffs. These Community Change Grants were established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and their funds expire in November of 2024.
“This historic, unprecedented funding has the promise to turn disadvantaged and overburdened areas into healthy, resilient, and thriving communities for current and future generations,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said.
