Roughly 32.5 million out of work
The Labor Department released updated statistics on the unemployment rate in the United States, giving additional insight into how the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to affect the economy. Last week, 1.5 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment benefits, revealing that Americans are continuing to lose jobs amid states beginning to reopen after strict stay-at-home orders.
The total number of those receiving aid did drop slightly holding steady at roughly 13.3% of the U.S. workforce. In total, economists estimate that roughly 32.5 million people are now out of work. Part of the increase in those seeking unemployment benefits is due to those who are self-employed or contract employees who became eligible for aid for the first time at the end of May.
