Rail service commenced in Peekskill, New York, on September 29, 1849, with the introduction of the Hudson River Railroad. The freight depot gained significance when President-elect Abraham Lincoln made a stop there during his journey to his inauguration on February 19, 1861. The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad acquired the line and reconstructed the passenger station. The freight depot was rebuilt around 1890 and both structures are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Peekskill became the northern terminus of the Hudson Division commuter service, while long-distance trains continued further north to destinations including Poughkeepsie and Albany. Following the decline of railroads in the post-World War II era, the station became part of Penn Central when New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968. The station came under the management of Metro-North Commuter Railroad in 1983.
