The U.S. Department of Education is partnering with the Department of Labor to expand educator apprenticeships and invest in teacher preparation programs.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said, “Teacher apprenticeships are a key strategy in our plan to Raise the Bar in education and improve learning conditions in our schools by ending the educator shortage and providing all students with great teachers who are prepared to succeed in the classroom from day one.”
The Education Department has received negative feedback from senators who sponsored last year’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) for interpreting the legislation as excluding schools that offer hunting and archery courses from federal funding. According to Senator Jon Tester of Montana, the amendment in the bill to the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act that prohibits funds for “training in the use of a dangerous weapon” was intended to block the use of federal funds for training school resource officers.
