Number of brands and flavors between 2020-2022 appeal to youth.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a recent study that revealed significant changes in the e-cigarette market. From January 2020 to December 2022, overall monthly unit sales increased by 46.6 percent, with the number of brands rising by 46.2 percent.
Prefilled device sales fell, while disposable devices and sales of flavors that appeal to youth, such as fruit, candy, and desserts, increased. The study showed that menthol-flavored e-cigarette use remained stable, but shares of tobacco and mint flavors decreased.
“The dramatic spikes in youth e-cigarette use back in 2017 and 2018, primarily driven by JUUL, showed us how quickly e-cigarette sales and use patterns can change,” said CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health Director Deirdre Lawrence Kittner. “Retail sales data are key to providing real-time information on the rapidly changing e-cigarette landscape, which is essential to reducing youth tobacco use.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For CDC officials as they study and provide recommendations regarding e-cigarettes.
- For state and local leaders as they implement restrictions on the sale of vape and e-cigarette paraphernalia.
