Do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. – Hebrews 10:35
How much stuff do you throw away? Organizations that track trash claim that the average American generates 4.5 pounds of trash each day. Much of the solid waste is paper and only a small percentage of the world’s solid waste is recycled. The most common form of waste is food. That alone should cause you to ponder what you do with what you purchase.
Beyond disposing of material possessions, today’s verse says, “Do not throw away your confidence.” Specifics are not known about the author of Hebrews or the people to whom he was writing, but he does make it clear that he is writing to believers who have endured affliction, reproach, persecution, and contempt for their association with other believers. He urges them to endure these trials, staying faithful and unwavering as they encourage others to do the same. As a believer in the finished work of the Savior, you were given the gift of eternal life, a possession that should be cherished. God is trustworthy and He has promised “a great reward,” in this world and the life to come.
You can have confidence in Him. The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans that nothing shall separate believers from the love of Christ, and they are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:36-39). The Lord has enabled you to conquer the trials of the past, which have made you stronger, and He will be with you as you endure those that will come in the future. The Holy Spirit provides the power that you need.
Pray now for those in government who need encouragement to stay strong in their faith. May they hold on mightily to their confidence in God’s faithfulness.
