The commission is considering making Wi-Fi hotspots available from libraries and supplying Wi-Fi on school buses.
Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel is promoting changes to the E-Rate program that would support Wi-Fi on school buses and Wi-Fi hotspots that could be checked out from libraries, school libraries, and schools. The E-Rate program was established in 1996 to provide basic internet connections to libraries but has expanded to cover services such as installing Wi-Fi throughout the premises.
At the American Library Association’s annual conference, Chair Rosenworcel stated, “At the FCC, we want to make sure that everyone, everywhere has access to high-speed internet service.“ She continued, “We know millions of people in this country are on the wrong side of the digital divide. Libraries help fill that gap. They have computer labs. They have classes to teach digital skills. And they help enroll people in our programs to support internet for all, like the Affordable Connectivity Program.”
Congress created the Emergency Connectivity Fund during the pandemic to help libraries and schools adapt to the needs of patrons and students. Chair Rosenworcel said, “It’s time for the FCC to update its E-rate program to reflect these realities to better support libraries and the students and communities they serve.”
