The two nations affirm their commitment to address illegal and support legal immigration.
The U.S. State Department recently released a joint commitment made by the United States and Columbia, briefly outlining steps they will mutually take to address the growing rate of South American migration. The two countries settled on three items that they considered “the beginning of a solution”; combating dangerous human smuggling networks, creating new and more flexible ways to lawful migration, and launching anti-poverty initiatives to promote South American economies.
“The U.S. government is working with the government of Colombia to promptly implement a model to ensure the success of this initiative,” the Department of State said. “This model will work to direct migrants from Haiti, Cuba, and Venezuela toward lawful pathways. The start date of the Safe Mobility Offices initiative will be established in the coming days.”
