There have always been differing views regarding the freedoms and rights that Americans should have. During the civil rights movement, then-Governor of Alabama George Wallace was a proponent of segregation. Though the federal government had authorized the desegregation of schools, Governor Wallace went so far as to personally stand at the entrance to the University of Alabama to prevent black students from enrolling. When the governor refused an informal request to stand down, on this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 11111, ordering the National Guard to move the governor aside. As you pray for those in authority today, intercede on behalf of federal and state officials to choose their courses of action with discernment. Then ask the Lord for wisdom and guidance so that you stand for what is right in His sight.
