A bipartisan resolution that would have reinstated the enforcement of tariffs on Chinese solar panel manufacturers has been vetoed by President Joe Biden.
The president stated, “Passage of this resolution bets against American innovation. It would undermine the efforts and create deep uncertainty for American businesses and workers in the solar industry. Therefore, I am vetoing this resolution.” He also said that when a tariff suspension moratorium expires in June 2024, he does not “intend” to extend it.
Legislators who introduced the bill said tariffs are necessary to protect America’s growing solar industry. Chinese companies control more than 80 percent of the global solar panel industry, and the manufacture has been tied to forced labor of Uyghur Muslims.
