Funding will support evaluations of water levels and extreme weather.
Officials from the Department of the Interior have announced that $12 million has been allocated to four territories of the United States to improve their climate resiliency. Island communities are generally more vulnerable to rising seawater and extreme weather than other regions. This funding will support measuring seawater temperatures, implementing anti-erosion technology, and mitigating flooding in the territory areas.
“The Investing in America agenda presents an important opportunity for the territories in their efforts to plan for, mitigate the effects of, and build resiliency against climate change,” said Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Carmen Cantor. “These investments will support our work to foster stable and sustainable island communities, as we partner with territorial governments to build climate resilient communities.”
