Estimated delivery date is now nine months behind schedule.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has submitted a court filing disclosing a delay of their next-generation delivery vehicles. The USPS placed a $2.98 billion order in March 2022 to update their fleet with 50,000 next-generation delivery vehicles, originally estimating that their roll-out date would begin in October 2023. Now the agency estimates that they will receive these vehicles in June 2024, nine months behind schedule.
This update to the USPS’s mail delivery fleet marks another in a series of setbacks. A month after announcing the order, 16 states and environmental groups filed a lawsuit to block the purchase of mostly gas-powered vehicles. The USPS promised to file an environmental impact statement on their delivery vehicles by June 30. The agency also plans to buy at least 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028 to supplement the initial purchase of gas-powered vehicles.
