On this day in 1774, British Parliament passed the Quartering Act, requiring American colonists to provide food, housing, and other necessities to the British military stationed in the colonies. Tensions had been mounting between Great Britain and the American colonies. This act was one of the four Intolerable Acts, also known as the Coercive Acts, that were passed that year by the British Parliament in response to what was considered colonial defiance. These acts, intended to regain control of the colonies, were viewed in America as a violation of colonists’ rights and contributed to the sentiment that ultimately led to the American Revolution. After the Revolutionary War ended, the newly established U.S. government included provisions in the Bill of Rights that prohibited the forced housing of soldiers in private homes without consent from the owner.
