Athletes qualify based on biological genetics.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, sponsored by Representative Greg Steube of Florida, would recognize a person’s sex under Title IX as that which is “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” It also prohibits federal financial assistance for programs that allow transgender women and girls to participate on female sports teams.
“This is about protecting women’s sports now and into the future,” Representative Elise Stefanik of New York said.
Representative Beth Van Duyne of Texas said, “Biological women and girls should only be competing against other biological women and girls. And I don’t care how many surgeries you have. I don’t care how many chemicals you put into your body. You’re not going to be a biological woman.”
While the future of the legislation in the Senate is uncertain, President Biden has announced he would veto such a measure.
