The acting director testifies in a Congressional hearing.
The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tae Johnson, testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee, presenting the agency’s budget proposal to the subcommittee members. The acting ICE director was asked whether or not the agency would continue the practice of detaining entire families who illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border, a policy adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent the international spread of the virus.
“At this time, there’s certainly no plan to restart family detention in any way, shape, or form,” Acting Director Johnson said during his testimony. But he also said that ICE officials did discuss jailing families as a potential option for dealing with the increase in illegal crossings.
