Student program may violate civil rights.
The Department of Education’s Office on Civil Rights announced they have launched an investigation into a University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville student program. A complaint had been lodged against the school’s Department of Pediatrics Visiting Elective Students Program accessing the program of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The program was reportedly only available to “underrepresented students,” a possible race-based discrimination.
According to the program’s website, it is open to “Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Pacific Island/Native Hawaiian, and LGBTQ” students applying for fourth-year electives in pediatrics. The program offered a scholarship created to “encourage and promote fourth-year medical students from underrepresented backgrounds to rotate at the department of pediatrics at the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville.”
The Civil Rights Office of the Education Department said they will investigate “whether the University discriminates on the basis of race, color, or national origin,” through its program.
