Put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. – Ephesians 6:15
On this day in 1868, the U.S. Senate voted against impeaching President Andrew Johnson. The House of Representatives had originally charged President Johnson with 11 articles of impeachment in February of 1868 following his decision to remove Edwin Stanton as the Secretary of the War Department. The House stated that the president illegally removed Secretary Stanton, violated several Reconstruction Acts, and made slanderous remarks about Congressional members. The Senate trial for these issues lasted until May 26, 1868. President Johnson was acquitted and went on to finish his term in office. Throughout this nation’s history, the president and members of Congress have experienced conflicting views, priorities, and expectations. As you pray for governing officials today, ask that God would draw these people to Him and carry out His plans for the country.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For the president and his administration to obtain wise counsel regarding their agenda and strategies.
- For members of the Senate as they hold confirmation hearings and vote on the president’s nominees.
