The Artemis II mission to travel around the Moon is scheduled to launch in 2024.
The last time an American crew visited the moon was with Apollo 17 between December 7 and 19, 1972, when their lunar landing broke many records.
For the first time in 52 years, NASA will launch a journey toward the Moon in 2024 in the Artemis II mission. Set to go around the moon are astronauts Christina Hammock Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. This mission will not attempt a Moon landing but will fly by, testing many of the systems that will be essential to future missions before they return to Earth.
The mission will take about four days and take them around the far side of the Moon.
“We need to celebrate this moment in human history because Artemis II is more than a mission to the Moon and back,” a NASA spokesman said. “It’s more than a mission that has to happen before we send people to the surface of the Moon. It is the next step that gets humanity to Mars … And this crew will never forget that.”
