The department continues to address backlog of energy efficiency updates.
The Department of Energy (DOE) finalized new energy efficiency standards for window air conditioners on Thursday, continuing to chip away at their backlog of Congressionally-mandated energy efficiency updates. This most recent update will come into full effect in 2024, and is expected to help Americans save a total of $1.5 billion per year on electricity bills. The new standards will also decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 106 million metric tons over the course of 30 years. This is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of 13.4 million homes.
“DOE will continue to engage with our public and private sector partners to finalize additional proposals like today’s that lower household energy costs and deliver the safer, healthier communities that every American deserves,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
