A Healthy Balance

Keep your life free from love of money and be content with what you have.  Hebrews 13:5

Isn’t it great when you have a healthy balance in your checking account? You probably feel peace of mind when you have money left over at the end of a pay period after your needs and some of your desires have been met. How much is enough? Today’s verse says to be content with what you have, and Ecclesiastes 5:10 states, “Whoever loves money never has enough.”

Some misquote the apostle Paul, claiming that money is the root of all evil. He actually wrote, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Timothy 6:10). The point is what you love and what you set your heart on! The Bible has a lot to say about money. In fact, it mentions money, wealth, and possessions over 2,300 times. “It is He who gives you power to get wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18). God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). In 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Paul says of the rich that they are not to be prideful of their wealth, but put their hope in God. They are to do good works and share. A believer’s love and concern for others is vital in having a godly view of money.

A healthy balance concerning money acknowledges God as the provider and money as a provision and tool to be used to honor Him. While the United States is known as a materialistic nation, it is also known to be a kind and generous nation. Pray that citizens and elected officials will recognize where all good things come from. Ask that the country as a whole will use its resources in ways that please the Lord.

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
