It is part of the debate over the debt ceiling.
Representatives Barbara Lee of California and Mark Pocan of Wisconsin introduced the “People Over Pentagon Act” Wednesday. The bill would cut the Pentagon’s budget by $100 billion.
The current Pentagon budget for fiscal year 2023 is $817 billion, as set out in the National Defense Authorization Act.
Representative Pocan said, “More defense spending does not guarantee safety, but it does guarantee that the military-industrial complex will continue to get richer.”
Representative Lee stated that the Pentagon more often “mismanaged” its funds, adding that “just $100 billion could do so much good.” She said, “Year after year, this country pours billions into our already-astronomical defense budget without stopping to question whether the additional funding is actually making us safer.”
