There has been bipartisan concern for the decision by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy of California has formally removed Representatives Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both of California, from the Committee on Intelligence.
In letter sent to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Speaker McCarthy said said, “I cannot put partisan loyalty ahead of national security. … As such, … I am hereby rejecting the appointments of Representative Adam Schiff and Representative Eric Swalwell to serve on the Intelligence Committee.”
The speaker said that the “misuse of this panel during the 116th and117th Congress severely undermined its primary national security and oversight missions—ultimately leaving our nation less safe.”
At a press conference earlier this month, Speaker McCarthy said, “What I am doing with the Intel Committee [is] bringing it back to the jurisdiction it’s supposed to do. Forward-looking to keep this country safe, keep the politics out of it. So, yes, I’m doing exactly what we’re supposed to do.”
