On this day in 1915, architect Henry Bacon led the groundbreaking ceremony for the D.C. landmark he designed, the Lincoln Memorial. Calls for a suitable way to honor President Abraham Lincoln had been raised since his death, and five separate bills were proposed between 1901 to 1908 to advance such an enterprise. Speaker of the House Joe Cannon opposed all five bills, successfully stalling the endeavor. Finally, the sixth bill passed through Congress in 1910, and Bacon’s design for the memorial was approved in 1913. At the groundbreaking ceremony two years later, Bacon overturned a few spades of dirt and helped lower the building’s cornerstone into the earth with a number of legislators. As you pray today, ask the Lord to move in the hearts of political officials to work for the nation’s best interests.
