The first location of Pennsylvania Hospital opened its doors to patients on this day in 1753 in the former mansion of Quaker Judge John Kinsey near Independence Hall. Benjamin Franklin paved the way for this new hospital and also included the Good Samaritan seal and motto “Take care of Him and I will repay thee,” declaring its charitable purpose. There was initial skepticism that the hospital would be able to benefit the more rural areas of the colony but, with the support from Franklin and the funds he was able to raise, the Pennsylvania Assembly approved. The Pennsylvania Hospital and its staff members eventually became a vital part of the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine, which was founded in 1765 and making it the first medical college in the colonies.
