Its mission ends after four years of science data collection.
NASA announced the end of the InSight Mars lander space mission this week. InSight, which stands for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport, was sent to study Mars’ deep interior, reporting on weather and quake activity. Mission controllers in Southern California have concluded the spacecraft’s batteries have run out of energy after two consecutive attempts at communication failed.
“I watched the launch and landing of this mission, and while saying goodbye to a spacecraft is always sad, the fascinating science InSight conducted is cause for celebration,” said NASA’s Science Mission Directorate Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen. “The seismic data alone from this Discovery Program mission offers tremendous insights not just into Mars but other rocky bodies, including Earth.”
