Vanita Gupta
Associate U.S. Attorney General
Vanita Gupta was born in November 1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University and received her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law.
She began her legal career with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund before becoming a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. She later became president and chief executive officer of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
President Barack Obama nominated Gupta to be the United States Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. In January 2021, President Joe Biden nominated her to serve as the United States Associate Attorney General. She was confirmed by the Senate and assumed her position in April 2021.
Gupta is married to Chinh O. Lee and they have two sons.

At an event commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta spoke about the overturn of Roe v. Wade, stating that it increases “the urgency of our work, including enforcement of the FACE [Freedom of Access to Clinic Enhances] Act, to ensure continued lawful access to reproductive services.”
The act protects pro-life pregnancy centers as well as abortion clinics, prohibiting “threats of force, obstruction and property damage intended to interfere with reproductive health care services.” However, the Justice Department has not charged anyone in attacks against multiple dozens of Catholic churches, pregnancy resource centers, and pro-life organizations. But the Civil Rights Division has charged 25 pro-life individuals with violations of the Freedom of Access act this year.
