Congress considers adding journalism negotiation to upcoming defense bill.
Congress is considering adding the Journalism Competition and Preservation act to their annual defense bill, which would allow news organizations to negotiate prices for tech companies to display their news articles on their sites. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said that the potential addition to the defense bill could force them to shut down Facebook’s news page.
Stone stated that “publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves because it benefits their bottom line – not the other way around.” However, supporters of the bill point to a similar law passed in Australia in 2021, which is has helped 30 Australian news organizations gain a vital source of income in the digital age.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for members of Congress as they consider the various amendments to the NDAA.
- For the president and his administration as they support interventions in the private sector.
- For U.S. officials to guard the freedoms within the First Amendment to the Constitution.
