Legislators investigate the claim of a Capitol Hill minister who said the ruling was shared prematurely.
The Supreme Court’s legal counsel has responded to questions raised by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Representative Hank Johnson of Georgia about a minister’s claim that Justice Samuel Alito had revealed the decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby before the ruling was released in 2014.
Legal counsel Ethan Torrey said the claim is uncorroborated, stating, “There is nothing to suggest that Justice Alito’s actions violated ethical standards.”
“Relevant rules balance preventing gifts that might undermine public confidence in the judiciary and allowing judges to maintain normal personal friendships,” Torrey wrote.
