Education Department Resolves Gender Discrimination Complaint

Oregon school district is required to provide equally for boys’ and girls’ teams.

The Office for Civil Rights for the Department of Education resolved an investigation into the alleged unequal treatment of girls’ softball teams compared to boys’ baseball teams. The investigation found that Oregon’s Salem-Keizer School District No. 24J did, in fact, provide better uniforms, coaching, and amenities for high school boys’ baseball teams than for high school girls’ softball teams. The district agreed to conduct an assessment and, if necessary, create a corrective action plan.

“As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX this year and the progress that continues nationally to ensure all students have equal opportunities to participate in athletic activities, Salem-Keizer School District No. 24J commits to important steps today to support girls’ athletics on an equal basis with boys’,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Assistant Secretary Lhamon as she heads the Office of Civil Rights in the Education Department.
  • For wisdom for Education Secretary Cardona as his department oversees efforts to resolve discrimination.
  • For U.S. educators and school administrators as they seek to support student athletic teams under Title IX.
