CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart moved to resolve thousands of lawsuits this week that had been made against their alleged mismanagement of opioids. The pharmacy companies agreed to pay a collective $13.8 billion to close the cases. Thousands of state and local governments have filed similar lawsuits against the drug companies over the course of several years.
Pharmacy chains had experienced losses in a few trials, including two rulings in Ohio and one in San Francisco. While the companies have not admitted any wrongdoing, the payments from this mass settlement will assist the governments in funding opioid epidemic recovery efforts.
