Group of senators writes the acting administrator about their concerns.
Six senators wrote to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this week, requesting that they regulate airlines’ ongoing reduction in the size of airplane seats. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Edward Markey of Massachusetts, and Ron Wyden of Oregon were among the leaders that signed the letter, noting that airlines have been consistently decreasing seat sizes since the 1990s. Legroom has decreased from 32 inches to 28 inches, and seat width decreased from 19 inches to 16 inches.
“We urge the FAA to comprehensively review the safety factors impacting seat pitch, width, and length and ensure that such safety factors take into account the entirety of the American public – including children, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and others,” the senators wrote to FAA Acting Administrator Billy Nolen.
The FAA has also received thousands of complaints since opening the topic for public comment.
