The Lord will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. – Luke 1:32-33
“Finding Your Roots” is a fascinating PBS weekly television show where Henry Hollis Gates, Jr., a professor and historian, traces genealogies, primarily of celebrities or public figures. In some cases, discoveries are only made for a few generations. However, other searches have covered hundreds of years. At the conclusion of each episode, he presents his guests with their Book of Life.
For many generations across the Old Testament, God’s people had been promised a King, one who would sit on the throne of David, a beloved king of the Israelites. Luke and Matthew detail the genealogy of this new king—Jesus—since it is through those bloodlines that He was entitled to hold the office of both King and Priest, essential to the fulfillment of prophecy.
Over the years that Israel and Judah had kings, there were many who were corrupt, tyrannical, and ungodly. But King Jesus would be different: a perfectly just King who could never be deceived, a King who would transform men and women by His grace, a King who would lay down His life in what looked like defeat, but was actually victory, and a King who had the authority to write your name in His Book of Life.
Who occupies the throne of your life? It is time to install King Jesus there if you have not already done so. He is the only One to whom you should bow the knee. The Lord calls you to love Him, to trust Him, and to obey Him. His terms for coming to Him are non-negotiable: You must believe Who He is, the Son of God, and what He has done, shed his blood on Calvary for the salvation of your soul. Pray for the people of this nation to awaken to the realization that there is a King who desires to love them, from those in the loftiest positions to the lowliest.
Today’s Verse: Luke 1:32-33
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.
