Marty Walsh
Secretary of Labor
Martin Joseph Walsh was born in April 1967, in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College.
He joined the Laborers’ Union local and later served as its president. He was elected secretary-treasurer and general agent of the Boston Metropolitan District Building Trades Council. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, then was elected Mayor of Boston, serving two terms.
Walsh was nominated by President Joe Biden to be Secretary of Labor. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate, and he was sworn in by the vice president in March 2021.

The Labor Department unveiled a proposed rule that would reclassify some independent contractors as company employees, a move that could prove disruptive to the gig economy.
The rule addresses companies that President Biden’s administration says “misclassify” employees as contractors. By becoming employees, those workers would be covered by overtime and minimum wage laws that do not apply to contractors.
“Misclassification deprives workers of their federal labor protections, including their right to be paid their full, legally earned wages,” Labor Secretary Marty Walsh stated.
The Labor Department said that misclassification is a problem in a host of industries, including home care, janitorial services, delivery, trucking, and construction. The department said the widespread issue makes it difficult for some businesses to compete with those that misclassify their workers as contractors.
