Officials say leaked taxpayer data did not include social security numbers.
The Internal Revenue Service has acknowledge that private taxpayer information was accidentally disclosed on its website earlier this year. The data that was shared was related to Form 990-T which is filed by approximately 120,000 people that discloses untaxable income and includes certain business income received by retirement accounts. The Treasury Department reported that the information included names, contact information, and financial information about income but did not disclose Social Security numbers nor individual’s full income information.
The IRS stated that it “took immediate steps to address this issue. The files have been removed from IRS.gov and will be replaced with updated files in the near future. In addition, the IRS also will be working with groups that routinely use the files to remove the erroneous files and replace them with the correct versions as they become available.“ The agency added, “The IRS will contact all impacted filers in the coming weeks.”
