Interior Secretary reports the derogatory term is being placed in 660 places.
The Department of the Interior recently announced that the Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force is reaching the final stages of removing a particular word that refers derisively to a tribal or indigenous woman from 660 geographic features. The term has historically been used as a slur. The Task Force reviewed 6,600 comments from the public and conducted consultations with tribal nations to make replacement name recommendations, which will be finalized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in September.
“I am grateful to the Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force for their work to ensure that racist names like sq___ no longer have a place on our federal lands. I look forward to the results of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names vote, and to implement changes as soon as is reasonable,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
