This past week, Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Alex Padilla of California wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg advocating for stricter enforcement of fair practices within the airline industry to bring more stability to consumers.
In 2022, 1 in 5 flights have arrived behind schedule and, while airlines have cited poor employment retention as the main reason for the delays, the senators claim the Department of Transportation has not adequately addressed “a wide range of rampant unfair practices.”
“By utilizing its existing licensing and rulemaking authority, the Department can improve experiences for travelers and help bring down exorbitant ticket prices driven in part by anticompetitive mergers,” the senators wrote.
