85 congressional workers file for representation
This week, 85 congressional staffers from eight representatives’ offices filed petitions for representation with the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, formally beginning the process of unionization. This is the first time in history that congressional employees have moved to unionize. The House granted their staffers the legal protection to unionize in May after staffers announced the formation of the Congressional Workers Union in February.
“For far too long, congressional staff have dealt with unsafe working conditions, unlivable wages, and vast inequity in our workplaces that prevent Congress from properly representing the communities and needs of the American people,” the Congressional Workers Union stated. “Having a seat at the bargaining table through a union will ensure we have a voice in decisions that impact our workplace.”
