Judge Myron Thompson

Myron Herbert Thompson was born in January 1947 in Tuskegee, Alabama. He earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. He served two years as an assistant attorney general of Alabama before going into the private practice of law.
Thompson was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a seat on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. He was confirmed by the Senate and received his commission in September 1980.
He served as Chief Judge from 1991 to 1998. Judge Thompson took senior status in August 2013.
Thompson is married to Ann Oldham and they have three sons.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson issued a preliminary injunction preventing Alabama from restricting abortions as part of a ban on elective medical procedures amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Based on the current record, the defendants’ efforts to combat COVID-19 do not outweigh the lasting harm imposed by the denial of an individual’s right to terminate her pregnancy, by an undue burden or increase in risk on patients imposed by a delayed procedure, or by the cloud of unwarranted prosecution against providers,” he wrote in an opinion.
Legal fights over abortion access in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic is also ongoing in Texas, Ohio and Oklahoma.
