President Biden confirms measures against Russian defense companies.
President Joe Biden met with NATO and G7 allies Thursday in emergency sessions about Russia’s attacks against Ukraine as the conflict reached the one-month mark. The 30-member NATO alliance gathered at its headquarters in Brussels to discuss plans to bolster troop rotations in countries along the southern portion of its eastern flank — and contingency plans in case Russian aggression intensifies.
The U.S. and other major countries have frozen reserves held by Russia’s central bank. The G7 and the European Union have blocked sales of gold reserves to avoid the support of the value of Russian currency. The U.S. Treasury Department issued guidance on its website warning that gold-related transactions involving Russia may be sanctionable by the U.S.
The U.S. imposed fresh sanctions Thursday, targeting dozens of Russian defense companies, hundreds of members of its parliament, and the chief executive of the country’s largest bank.
