Justices seek to determine best practices regarding controlled substances.
The Supreme Court is deliberating the case that sentenced two doctors to prison for violation of the Controlled Substances Act. The doctors have challenged their convictions, saying that they were not drug dealing but legally prescribing large doses of opioids to help their addicted patients slowly curb their cravings in a controlled manner.
“What if a doctor legitimately believes that legitimate medical practice encompasses giving people who are dependent on drugs the drugs they need to satisfy that dependency?” said Justice Samuel Alito during discussions.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh attempted to clarify the legal language around medicinal controlled substances. “The ‘legitimate medical purpose’ is a very vague thing on which reasonable people can disagree,” Justice Kavanaugh stated.
