New federal center oversees collective union voting.
In July of 2021, the U.S. and Mexico announced a plan to take on large-scale union activities at one facility run under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The new Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration was established, and last week the U.S. Department of Labor announced that the first-ever union election was overseen in the facility, where more than 4,000 votes were cast by the National Independent Auto Workers’ Union.
“As workers, we are stronger when we can speak with one voice – and we are stronger when our fellow workers around the world can do the same,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “The work of defending freedom of association never stops, but this historic election shows us that we can make progress toward the right of all workers to associate freely when we work together.”
