Russia desires a written commitment from the U.S. regarding the draft treaty.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in Geneva, Switzerland, Friday as the threat of a Russian invasion into Ukraine looms ever larger.
“We are now on a clear path in terms of understanding each other’s concerns, each other’s positions,” Secretary Blinken stated.
Prior to Christmas, the parties had entered into a “draft treaty,” and now Russia is asking for written answers to their security requests in exchange for direct negotiations. Secretary Blinken has agreed to provide a written response.
“To the extent that Russia’s engaged for now in diplomacy but at the same time continues to take escalatory actions, continues to build, as forces in Ukraine report, continues to plan for aggressive action against Ukraine,” Secretary Blinken said. “We and all of our allies and partners are equally committed to make sure we are doing everything possible to Russia that there will be, as I said, a swift, severe, united response to any form of aggression by Russia directed toward Ukraine.”
Among the topics being discussed are another summit between President Biden and President Putin, after the Russians review the impending written U.S. response to the draft treaty.
