His orders are meant to make the federal government carbon neutral by 2050
President Biden has ordered federal agencies to pursue the purchase of electric vehicles, harness wind, solar, and nuclear energy to power facilities, and to work towards using sustainable building materials. The goal is for the federal government to move towards being carbon neutral by the year 2050.
The executive order said it was being done “in order to establish the Federal Government as a leader in sustainability.” It also added that the orders are responding to “mounting risks and costs already posed by the climate crisis.”
Over the next ten years, the president wants the government to cease purchasing electricity produced from sources that emit carbon dioxide. By 2035, the administration wants all new federal cars and truck purchases to be zero-emissions.
