Defense against hypersonic missiles to fit current naval destroyers.
The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) announced last month that Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon Missiles and Defense have been chosen to design the Glide Phase Interceptor for hypersonic missile defense. Predicting the trajectory of hypersonic missiles is difficult since they are maneuverable and fly in excess of five times the speed of sound.
“We are pleased to have these contractors working with us to develop design concepts for the GPI,” stated Rear Admiral Tom Druggan, head of MDA’s Sea-based Weapons Systems. “Multiple awards allow us to execute a risk reduction phase to explore industry concepts and maximize the benefits of a competitive environment to demonstrate the most effective and reliable Glide Phase Interceptor for regional hypersonic defense, as soon as possible.”
MDA Director Vice Admiral Jon Hill said, if the initial outfitting of the U.S. Navy is successful, “We can move it to the land-based battery to protect other things against that sort of hypersonic threat.”
